Google – The Best Social Environment For Equal Opportunity

The Internet is under attack by the Obama Administration through executive powers. This does not bode well for the Internet entrepreneurs or for political speech. The following is an analysis of how the Internet and specifically Google has created a free world-wide social environment. The governments of the world should study the Internet Society. They might learn something.

Google is known as a search engine for relevant information in the Internet. There are other search engines or browsers such as Yahoo, Explorer, MSN Bing, etc. However, Google is more than that just a browser.

Google has managed to create the foundation of a solid natural and free social environment, a virtual society with no geographical or language barriers.

In the name of fairness, I am strongly biased towards individual freedom. I grew up under communism but more importantly, I witnessed the transition from a free society to communism and the disappearance of freedom. The communist movement expected that all international masses will assume power and become a great world communist system. Had Google and the Internet been around in those days, communism would have embraced it and maybe would have learned something useful: Freedom of the masses can be very constructive. I wish the present politicians would take a look and learn something from the environment Google has created and it is still nurturing.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin started Google in January 1996 as a research project when they were both PhD students at Stanford University in California. Originally, Google ran under the Stanford University website, with the domain

The domain was registered on September 15, 1997. The company was incorporated on September 4, 1998, at a friend’s garage in Menlo Park, California.

The Google name comes from “Googol”. Googol refers to the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. This is such a large number that can not be achieved if you count all the sand particles on the whole universe. It was supposed to mean an infinity number of people and their interactions with no end in sight. Google runs over one million servers in data centers around the world, and processes over one billion search requests and twenty petabytes (1000 trillion) of user-generated data every day, which is an incredible achievement. Google got started with just $100,000 from a private investor.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin had a vision and a dream with a purpose: Match other peoples’ dreams and desires with each other, so all can benefit. If a vendor had a good product or service, Google made it easy for the seeking party to find it. A book author could publish and sell a book without going through a publisher. Google made it easier to promote the book. Talented individuals on a shoe string could start a home business over night. There are billions of sites on the Internet with all kinds of information or products for sale. All of that information has been posted by individuals or companies in the expectation to be found and/or shared by interested parties or prospects. Google did not create the information; private parties and institutions did.

Google’s mission was to come up with the best possible presentation to any inquiry. This is not a trivial task, certainly not on the Internet. Complex algorithms as well as site ratings are being used to connect requests with delivery sites. Before Google came into existence, the early browsers such as Netscape, MS Explorer, Yahoo and dozens more used straight forward techniques of cataloging words or phrases and associating them with relevant sites. However, when you deal with billions of sites and entries every day, it is very difficult to determine which site provides the best and most relevant information requested through a query. Using Google’s browser, the satisfactory result usually comes up on top of the first page out of millions of postings containing similar information. People would very seldom look beyond the first three pages.

Larry Page had an idea: To evaluate pages in the order of importance and relevance, they would count the number of back links to that particular site. The total amount of links and where they were coming from was also important.

For instance, if I were a small contractor designing home theaters and had no money for advertising my business, I would design a website with all sorts of instructions and drawings as a portfolio to help my prospects understand how I would deploy a project. The site will look like a tutorial. The next step would be to contact some major distributors of home theater furniture, electronics, cables, etc. and ask them to link my educational site to theirs and offer it to their customers as an educational tool for a do-it-yourself project. All parties benefit. The same concept works when someone with expertise in a particular field publishes useful information through a variety of electronic publications. The author’s link will point to his site and Google will index it and qualify it.

Google calls this new technology PageRank where a website’s relevance was determined by the number of pages and the importance of those pages is linked back to the original site.

Google was granted a patent describing their PageRank mechanism. The patent was officially assigned to Stanford University and lists Lawrence Page as the inventor. By 2006 the name “Google” had found its way into everyday language, causing the verb “Google” to be added to the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary, denoted as “to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet.”

This feature was very important in the context of equal social opportunity because it enabled creativity to be distributed throughout the Internet at almost no cost to the creator. Before this technology was deployed, an Internet contender had to spend a lot of advertising dollars to promote his site. Otherwise no one could find it. The search engines did not even index it.

Since 2006, Google has added a wide range of support services and capabilities either through acquisitions or internal development. It is not my intent to do a thorough analysis of all its capabilities. I am going to outline the most important functions and the free tools provided by Google to its subscribers.

Google and its function

Google has been criticized often as being too big and too dominant in the Internet field. The critics usually fail to mention the valuable services Google provides to big and small businesses alike as well as to the individual entrepreneur. Most importantly, it provides real value to the end user, the potential consumer products and services advertised or promoted through the Internet.

Google makes money by providing a sound platform for the advertisers and a wide range of helpful free advertising tools. Google does not advertise. The advertisers do. This is a mutually beneficial relationship.

Google AdWords helps advertisers display their advertisements in the Google content network, through either a cost-per-click or cost-per-view scheme. This is a true advertising service with daily monitoring and budget control facilities. An advertiser can set up a series of ads associated with certain keywords and test its performance daily. It is interesting that Google uses a price bidding system. If you bid for a high ranking position on the top page and if your ad attracts more visitors than your competition next to you, Google will gradually decrease your ad cost. It is possible to have a very top position on the page and pay less per click than the rest below you. This encourages creativity and unique content which in turn will make your campaign more successful.

Keywords Services, all the above services would not be very useful unless you have some means of selecting the right keyword and phrases that match what your potential prospectors are looking for. Remember, you respond to written requests. Google has an extensive support service that helps in the selection of the right key words as well as monitoring the number of links associated with your competition. These powerful tools enable you to determine both the demand and the competition based on keywords alone.

There have been other services such as Gmail, Google News, Orkut and more being added as time goes by. There are no limits on creativity in a free social environment such as the one created by Google.

I am not trying to minimize the contributions of other browsers such as Yahoo and Explorer. This article is not really about Google as a browser. It is about the free international society Google has helped create through access to knowledge and economic development.

Economic impact

The cost of running a website could be as low as $5.00 per month. Blogs are free and can be used instead. The cost of entering an international business is very low. There are thousands of individuals who make a living by selling books that are often not even their own. Rock bands can record and publish their music for free. I can go on and on. All of it has been made possible, to a certain extent, by Google through its affordable promotional capabilities.

Most importantly, Google has managed to create this social environment because there was no government oversight or regulation. The only self policing policy deals with abuse of services such as spamming. When the Chinese government tried to interfere with its operations, Google decided to get out of China.


Imagine a World Governance where all freedoms are assured: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Association, Freedom of Commerce and Freedom of Exchange of Ideas and Opinions, (including political). Internet is just that, and Google is the facilitator and the Governance.

Do not allow the government to take this away through some form of regulation in the name of “public good”.

Social Media Internet Marketing – If You Can Do it Once You Can Do it Twice

The statement, "If you can do it once you can do it twice if you did it on purpose" is used with some frequency in this article on social media internet marketing as well as all over the marketing literature in one form or another. I have been asked to write an article devoted to what my own thinking is behind that statement. I had not thought to write this article on my own because I have been saying that as a trainer for a very long time and it is so basically fundamental (in my mind) that I forgot how important it is to really understand this concept. In my opinion these counts as one of those fundamental keys to successful internet marketing.

Starting at the end of the statement, "… if you did it on purpose." means that you had a desired result and some sort of plan of action to achieve that result. It was not a shot in the dark. You did what you did with intent and purpose. This is a critical point and is why I say it at the end of the statement where you are most likely to remember it. It is possible to achieve something you want by swinging wildly. However, it is illegally you will be able to efficiently or consistently achieve it again. For example, if you have never played golf before you have no idea what you are doing because you do probably know the little ball goes into that tiny hole way over there. You take what you consider to be a decent swing at the ball (though any good golfers around you see it for what it is … a wild whack at the ball). It flies down the fairway and what do you know? It goes straight into that tiny hole way over there … a hole in one! Now … do it again. Yeah. Right. That is just not going to happen. You have no idea how you did it in the first place and it is nearly impossible to do even for the professionals. Sure, theoretically you did it once so you could surely do it again. It would not be defying any laws of physics to so it could happen. But, you can not make it happen when you want it to … or even get close. Until you understand what you must do to achieve a desired result in concrete terms you will not be able to learn to repeat it consistently enough to get sustainable results.

So, you now have a plan to execute and understand why you need that in order to reach your goal … which is probably to make a lot of money. In this discussion it makes sense to start referring to marketing instead of golf. It is time to address the beginning of the statement, "If you can do it once …". You execute your strategy to get a visitor to your web site. It does not work. What now? Since you know exactly what you did that did not achieve your desired result you can make an adjustment to that strategy. Just one. That is important. If you make several adjustments to your strategy at the same time you will have no idea what led to your success (and that, after all, is the important piece of information you are after here). With everything you are doing concretely understood by you and with the results concretely measured you can repeat this plan, execute, measure and adjust cycle until you find an execution plan that gets you your visitor. Now you know exactly how you got that one visitor. You probably also know some execution plans that do not work. Both pieces of information are highly valuable to you!

We find ourselves now at the second component of that original statement, "… you can do it twice …". If your thought processes, execution plan and measuring methods are working rationally you now know how to get not only that one visitor. You also know how to get one visitor again … otherwise known as twice. By extension, you also now know how to get your third visitor … and your fourth … and your hundredth … thousandth … You have a concrete and conscious executable strategy that will get you a visitor. You can now get a visitor again whenever you want one by simply executing your known plan again. You have built the knowledge and skills necessary to build your business … on purpose.

Additionally, since you know all the steps to getting a visitor you can now also work to get better, faster and more efficient at what you are doing and accelerate your rate of visitors as compared to your effort. Also, since none of your steps are a mystery to you, once you will think of ways to improve and automate your steps for ever greater effectiveness.

Will you ever get to the point where you have thousands of visitors if you do not know exactly how you get the first one? And, if you do not know how to repeat what you did, will you know how to get the second one? The third? Fourth? No! While it is still possible you will get lucky if you take wild swings into the internet marketing universe you will never be able to look at your business, decide to make it grow and then make it happen … on purpose.

That first statement has now been broken down into its three parts and the reason each part is there has been explained. Following this paragraph is a mantra for you that is a logical extension of what this article has been about. Once you have an action set that you know to be effective you will want to take it to the next level of effectiveness by understanding and implementing exactly how to:

Rinse and Repeat. Rinse and Repeat. Rinse and Repeat …

If you can do it once you can do it twice, as long as you did it on purpose.

A Critical Valentus Review – Should You Join?

If you’re reading this Valentus Review, then chances are you’re either looking to join the company as a distributor or maybe you’re someone who was approached by a Valentus distributor and you’re doing a little bit of research. Regardless of how you found this review, you’re at the right place because in this third party Valentus Review I’m going to cover the essential details you need to know before making an educated decision about the company. Now before you proceed, I do want to disclose that as I write this I am not a Valentus distributor nor am I affiliated with the company in any way. And to be totally honest, it really doesn’t matter to me one way or the other if you join or not so you can be sure that you’ll be getting a truly unbiased perspective.

First things first, let’s take a look at the company itself. Right out of the gate, I couldn’t find much information except that the company was started by CEO Dave Jordan. Also when I checked the website, it wasn’t really clear where their home office is located although it lists a Nevada address as a place to return product. With that being said, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the company isn’t legit. It is a start-up company that just recently launched less than a year ago as of this writing. And typically, start-up deals don’t have much information posted online. One thing I will say that I do like is that the company looks to be very friendly to the whole online world and online marketing. If you’re going to join a Network Marketing company, it’s always a major benefit to partner with a company that is friendly to both offline and online marketers.

As far as the products go, Valentus carries 4 products you can promote. The first one is Weight Loss Coffee. Coffee is a huge Industry and in my opinion there isn’t a better product to market via Network Marketing because almost everyone consumes it and you don’t have to change people’s buying habits. The coffee contains Garcinia Cambogia, Ginseng Extract, Green Tea Extract and Chromium. These ingredients all aid in weight management and fat loss. The second product they carry is Weight Loss Tea. The tea contains Garcinia Cambogia, Raspberry Ketones and Maqui Berry. The third product is a fruit flavored drink that aids in immune support. And lastly, they carry a fruit flavored energy drink that contains Guarana Seed, Maqui Berry and Gotu Kola. I haven’t personally tried any of the products but they look to be of high quality. I like how they’re packaged in single serving packets which make the products easy to carry around and give out to prospects to sample.

Now let’s cover the actual compensation plan. Distributors are able to earn income 7 different ways. You can earn immediate income by retailing product and personally enrolling new distributors into your team. While there are several ways to enroll people, just assume that everyone joins at the $499 Pack for the sake of simplicity. Whenever you personally enroll someone, you’ll personally earn a $100 Bonus. There’s also a Coded Bonus program that pays out $100 Bonus on your Legacy Team’s production. For big recruiters, there’s a lot of money in the Coded Bonus. Just make sure you understand it well and how it works if you’re serious about joining the company and starting a home business.

As far as the residual income part of the compensation plan goes, the company has a Binary Two-Team structure. As you build your right side and left side, the company pays you a $20 Cycle Bonus whenever there’s 200 BV on one side and 100 BV on the other side. Here’s my take on this… On one hand, it’s very attractive because getting a $20 Bonus on essentially 300 BV is pretty aggressive. The one thing though is you have to make sure you understand the Binary and how it works. For example, if you have 300 BV on one side and 0 BV on the other, you don’t cycle. In other words, you need to be really good at balancing your two legs if you want to make a healthy residual. Now to be clear, I’m not saying this is a bad thing or good thing. You can certainly make serious income regardless as long as you understand the compensation plan and how to structure your group. It’s also important to note that the company pays out 2%-25% Matching Bonuses on up to 7 Generations which is pretty generous.

So should you join Valentus or not? Well… only you can answer that. In my opinion, the pros of the company are they market easy-to-share products like coffee and tea, and the company is very friendly to online marketers. The cons are it is a start-up which is very risky and there isn’t enough information on the actual company and its infrastructure. That being said, these are just opinions and what I may think of as a pro, might be a con to you. One thing is for sure is that if you do decide to partner with Valentus, you’re going to need leads. Having an on-going steady flow of leads is critical to your success. Why? Because it matters not that Valentus has great products and a lucrative compensation plan if you have no one to talk to about the deal. Your ultimate success will depend on your ability to personally enroll new people and get customers, and those two things depend on how many leads you are getting. Of course, you can talk to your friends and family (and you should) but when your warm market runs out, it’s important that you know how to leverage Attraction Marketing so you can get leads online and build your business even if your warm market dries up. If you’re able to put Attraction Marketing to work for you, there’s no telling how prosperous your business can be.

Starting a private server is much like starting an internet business, I will take it upon me to quote one line from an e-book I have read, the line states “Knowing, Caring, Profiting”, and these are exactly the steps you need to take to start a successful private server.

You will need to KNOW what tools are required for starting the private server; tools can be money, hardware, knowledge, connections.

You genuinely need to CARE about your server; this means everything that comes with it: players (community), scripts (setting up custom content), server (maintaining a lag-free environment). This is of course not everything, but these are probably the issues you will mostly be busy with.

After you gain all knowledge that is needed to set up the server, as well as showing that you actually care for the players and the community by participating in play or running awesome events, you can PROFIT from it by asking for donations in exchange for items or services.


Knowing also means that you know which type of private server you want to run, this goes hand in hand with caring for the content and topic your server is started for; if you do not care about World of Warcraft, do NOT start a World of Warcraft private server. You might want to be tempted to do this because WoW is very popular, but this also means that there are a lot of other private servers trying to make money from it as well.

Another part of knowing is diving into the documentation that comes with the private servers, setting it up is relatively easy, you can set up a Ragnarok Online private server within 15 minutes and have players coming to it. The main thing your server will need to even remotely compete with others is “content”; yes, every game has its own content but why would players come to a server that has 0-10 players instead of one that has 1000+ and has some custom weapons? Exactly; they won’t.

This means you will have to think of unique content that players would like to see, you can either have someone create the content for you for a price, or do it yourself. Depending on your financial situation this may vary. If you choose to let others create content/scripts, it’s always good to at least know something about it so you can provide valuable input.

You could ask around on various forums what players really want to see in a private server, and work with that, once it’s finished, you can then advertise your server together with the announcement that you have this ‘elite’ content they wanted.

Not only content is important, you will also need to know and keep track of updates that the emulator provides, so you can stay up to date on your server and have the latest bug fixes and content.

Like I said before, you will need to care about every aspect of your private server if you want to profit from it. This is exactly why you need to pick a game you are comfortable with; maybe you have played the game yourself. You will need to be enthusiastic about it and you should have fun running the private server altogether.

Look for enthusiasm, not money. Money is always nice, but it should not be your main focus. If you enjoy running your server, players will enjoy walking and jumping about on it, and will genuinely feel that they are a part of your community. This results in these players inviting their friends to play with them on your server (word of mouth) and will eventually result in increased traffic on your server.

I will discuss marketing your private server in an upcoming article, we will discuss how you can gain initial players to start with and keep them coming.

Like I said before, you will need to care about every aspect of your private server if you want to profit from it. This is exactly why you need to pick a game you are comfortable with; maybe you have played the game yourself. You will need to be enthusiastic about it and you should have fun running the private server altogether.

Patience is also a concept of caring for your private server. Of course you will want to have 50 players running about on the server within the first week, but unless you have attained credibility through another source (friend/marketing/being famous), this is unlikely to happen.

Setting up a server is easy, maintaining a server is hard work. When you start out, nobody knows your server even exists, so obviously you will have zero to none players. You will have to create awareness of it to attract players.

You need patience:

  • As you gain your first players
  • As you gain enough players to profit from it enough to cover the monthly hosting costs
  • For word of mouth to spread between players so they come play on YOUR server
  • To see how well your advertisement and awareness techniques have worked out.
  • For your reputation to succeed you

After your server has a vast traffic base you can start asking for donations. Maybe you have already done this when you started your server and received a few dollars in the process. The more players you have the more profit you will gain from donations.

On private servers, donations mostly go hand in hand in exchange for items; the player pays an amount of cash in exchange for an item or credits, which can be used to purchase items ingame. This is probably the most popular method of profiting from a private server.

When you receive great amounts of profit, do not start to neglect your server, remember that your income is dependent on the players, and when they leave; so does your cash flow.

Re-invest your profits into the server:

  • Create an extra ‘realm’ or ‘world’
  • Redesign the website by making it easier to access
  • Provide a 3 way system for players to join (3 steps “register, download, play”).
  • Advertise your server on toplist sites such as
  • Use Google AdWords to redirect players to your website

There are countless methods you can use to invest your profits to gain even more players.

“Remember: Players = Profit = Players”

Cue Stick Grooming, Cue Tips Care, & How to Maintain a Cue Stick

The most important part of any cue is the tip. Your major concern should be how well it maintains its shape and holds chalk. The tip should never be smooth or chalk deficient!

1. The tip should be shaped within a dime to nickel radius. A gauge is available with most tools.

2. If not within dime to nickel radius, place a tip shaper on the floor with the bowl side up.

3. Turn the cue upside down placing the tip of the cue into the shaper bowl.

4. Rotate the cue while pivoting the cue back and forth. Be careful not to over sand and wear the tip down too quickly. Remember, you are not sanding down the tip, simply shaping it.

5. Use a tip-pik and scuffer on the leather tip to roughen and create deep perforations for maximum chalk retention and better ball control.

6. Apply a small amount of wax to the outside edge of the tip and burnish. This helps prevent the tip from mushrooming and will sharpen your sights in relationship to the cue tip and the ball.

Shaft Maintenance

When the cue gets dirty or sticky the shaft needs to be cleaned.

1. Using No. 600 wet/dry sandpaper, white scotch bright pad or No. 0000 steel wool clean the shaft from the ferrule, down 10-15 inches.

2. Using a piece of brown paper, undyed leather or even a 20 dollar bill, burnish the shaft until it becomes hot to the touch. This gives the shaft a polished look and feel, enabling the shaft to slide smoothly through your fingers without wearing a glove.

3. Another option would be to apply a small amount of conditioner to the shaft working it down into the shaft where you have cleaned.

Additional Maintenance

1. To clean and polish the ferrule use Pearl Drop Tooth Polish with a dampened cotton cloth and twist the ferrule back and forth in the cloth between your fingers.

2. Adding a drop of silicon, shaft treatment or graphite to the joint pin will reduce friction

3. Never apply water to any part of the cue stick.

Tips on Protecting Your Investment

1. Never leave your cue stick in areas of extreme heat or cold. To do so may causes the shaft to warp.

2. Do not expose your cue to any moisture.

3. Make sure you always have the bumper on the butt end of your cue.

4. Never apply any oils to your cue. This will soften the wood and damage parts.

5. Never leave your cue unattended unless it is secure.

6. A Good Rule to Follow…Only let your cue go where you would go.

7. Always store your cue exactly upright or horizontal.

8. Always use experienced and reliable service personnel.

Search Engine History – Web Search Before Google

Did Google always dominate the web search market? In the second of three posts on the history of the Search Engines, I look at the pioneers of the early search market, including the very first web crawler, WWW Wanderer. Did you know that Disney used to be one of the biggest players in the business? Or that Altavista was more technically advanced, in many ways, in 1998 than Google is now? Read on!

The pioneering Web Search Engines

Indeed, the point at which modern search engines first began to appear is after the development and popularization of the MOSAIC browser in 1993. In 1994, Internet Magazine was launched, together with a review of the top 100 websites billed as the 'most extensive' list ever to appear in a magazine. A 28.8Kbps modem was priced at $ 399 and bought the internet within the reach of the masses (albeit slowly)!

At this point and for the next 4-5 years, it was just about possible to produce printed and web-based directories of the best sites and for this to be useful information for consumers. However, the rapid growth in the number of www sites (from 130 in 1993 to over 600,000 in 1996) began to make this endeavor seem as futile as producing a printed yellow pages of all the businesses, media and libraries in the world!

Whilst WAIS was not a lasting success, it did highlight the value of being able to search – and click through to the full text of documents on multiple internet hosts. The nascent internet magazines and web directories further highlighted the challenge of being able to keep up with an internet which was growing faster than the ability of any human being to catalog it.

In June 1993, Matthew Gray at MIT developed the PERL-based web crawler, WWW Wanderer. Initially, this was simply devised as a tool to measure the growth of the world wide web by "collecting sites". Later, however, Gray (who now works for Google) used the crawled results to build an index called "Wandex" and added a search front-end. In this way, Gray developed the world's first web search engine and the first automatic web crawler (an essential feature of all modern search engines).

Whilst Wanderer was the first to send a robot to crawl web sites, it did not index the full text of documents (as had WAIS). The first search engine to combine these two essential ingredients was WebCrawler, developed in 1994 by Brian Pinkerton at the University of Washington. WebCrawler was the search engine on which many of us early pioneers first scoured the web and will be remembered with affection for its (at the time) attractive graphical interface and the incredible speed with which it returned results. 1994 also saw the launch of Infoseek and Lycos.

However, the scale of growth of the web was beginning to put indexing beyond the reach of the average University IT department. The next big step required capital investment. Enter, stage right, the (then huge Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) and it's super-fast Alpha 8400 TurboLaser processor. DEC was an early adopter of web technologies and the first Fortune 500 Company to establish a web site. Its search engine, AltaVista, was launched in 1995.

Founded in 1957, DEC had during the 1970s and 1980s led the mini-computer market. In fact, most of the machines on which the earliest ARPANET hosts ran were DEC-PDP-10s and PDP-11s. However, by the early 1990s, DEC was a business in trouble. In 1977, their then CEO, Ken Olsen, famously said that "there is no reason for any individual to have a computer in his home". Whilst something taken out of context at the time, this quote was in part symptomatic of DEC's slow response to the emergence of personal computing and the client-server revolution of the 1980s.

By the time Altavista was being developed, the company was besieged on all sides by HP, Compaq, Dell, SUN and IBM and was losing money like it was going out of fashion. Louis Monier and his research team at DEC were "discovered" internally as the ultimate PR coup; the entire web captured – and searchable – on a single computer. What better way to showcase the company as an innovator and demonstrate the lightning fast speed and 64-bit storage of their new baby?

During 1995, Monier unleashed a thousand web crawlers onto the young web (at that time an unpresented achievement). By December (site launch) Altavista had indexed more than 16 million documents totaling several billion words. In essence, Altavista was the first commercial-strength, web-based search engine system. AltaVista enjoyed near 300,000 visits on its first day alone and, within nine months, was serving 19 million requests a day.

Altavista was, indeed, well ahead of it's time technically. The search engine pioneered many technologies that Google and others later took years to catch up with. The site carried natural search queries, Boolean operators, automatic translation services (babelfish) and image, video and audio search. It was also lightning fast (at least in the beginning) and (unlike other engines) coped well with indexing legacy internet resources (and particularly the then still popular UseNet newsgroups).

After Altavista, Magellan and Excite (all launched in 1995), a multitude of other search engine companies made their debut, including Inktomi & Ask Jeeves (1996) and Northern Light & Snap (1997). Google itself launched in 1998.

Of these early engines, each enjoyed its own enthusiastic following and a share of the then nascent search market. Each also had its own relative strengths and weaknesses. Northern Light, for example, organized its search results in specific folders labeled by subject (something arguably still to be better informed today) and admitted a small – but enthusiastic following as a result. Snap pioneered search results ranked, in part, by what people clicked on (something Yahoo! and Google are only toying with now!)

In January 1999 (at the beginning of the dotcom boom), the largest sites (in terms of market share) were Yahoo !, Excite, Altavista and Disney, with 88% of all search engine referrals. Market share was not closely related to the number of pages indexed (where Northern Light, Altavista and a then relatively unknown Google led the pack):
